I know what you’re thinking—staying at a Disney hotel sounds like the dream. 

You’re right, it can be magical, with perks like Early Theme Park Entry, complimentary Disney transportation, and staying right in the heart of the “Disney bubble.” It’s convenient, exciting, and keeps you close to all the action. 

But here’s the thing…

 Staying off-site can be just as beneficial, especially if you’re looking to customize your Disney vacation experience in ways that fit your family’s specific needs.

Key Reasons Staying Off Disney Property Is Better

Staying off-site can mean more flexibility, more space, and, often, more savings. 

Off-site hotels and vacation rentals can provide you with more amenities for your money, like a full kitchen or even a private pool. 

Plus, staying off Disney property lets you experience more of the “real world” Orlando, including grocery stores, restaurants, and attractions outside the most magical place on earth.

There’s lots more in the Orlando area besides Disney World. 

For instance, some of the other big things you can do in the area include:

• Universal Studios
• Discovery Cove
• Kayaking and paddle boarding with manatees
• Kennedy Space Center
• Icon Park
• Live music or an Orlando Magic basketball game at Kia Center 

Honestly, there’s so much more, but these are some of my favorites.

While staying at a Walt Disney World resort hotel offers convenience and on-site perks, staying off Disney property can actually benefit your vacation by giving you more freedom, saving extra money, and allowing you to explore Central Florida beyond the parks. 

So, whatever your reasoning for considering staying off property, I’ve got you covered so you can make the best decision for your family. 

Let’s get into why staying offsite might just be the perfect fit for your next Disney vacation.

Transportation Flexibility

First up is transportation flexibility

One of the biggest differences when staying at an off-site hotel or vacation rental is that you’re in control of your transportation. 

While Disney resort guests enjoy complimentary transportation, staying off-site usually means renting a car and driving yourself. 

At first, this might sound like a hassle, but having your own car gives you the freedom to set your schedule.

Want to stop by the grocery store on the way back from Magic Kingdom? Need to make a quick Starbucks run before heading to Animal Kingdom?

You’re not dependent on Disney transportation schedules, which means more flexibility for you.

I actually rocked my first minivan rental off-site back in 2022, haha. A little blurry, but proof is below 😂.

Plus, if you’re staying at an off-site hotel or short-term rental property with free parking, you won’t have to worry about parking fees when you come and go. 

Oh, and many of these hotels also offer shuttle services to the Disney parks, so you have the option to drive or sit back and relax if you’d rather not navigate traffic.

What If I Don’t Know My Way Around Orlando?

Driving in Orlando, especially around Disney World property, isn’t as complex as it seems. My best advice is to familiarize yourself with the area before you go. 

Download a map or use your GPS to figure out the best routes to the parks, Disney Springs, and other attractions. 

Traffic can be a factor, especially during peak times on Intersate-4, so planning your departure times with that in mind can save you from frustration.

Insider Tip: Google Maps should give you a good idea of how long it will take to get around. Just plug your info in and set the time you want to leave, and it will give you an estimate for that time frame.

I’ve rented vehicles multiple times at the MCO airport, and everything is really seamless.

It’s such a lifesaver.

But besides the rental process, driving in Orlando wasn’t as tricky as I thought, and with the convenience of parking at the parks, it worked well for our family.

Getting around is actually pretty easy. I-4 is the main freeway that will get you to most places. 

I’ve stayed off property probably a dozen times now, typically renting a home in the Renion area, and I love the flexibility it gives us. We can run errands, dine off-property, and even take a day trip to Universal Orlando.

The flexibility allowed us to make the trip uniquely ours, and we didn’t feel bound by park hours or Disney’s complimentary transportation schedules. 

Insider Tip: If you’re driving to the parks, arrive early! You’ll get better parking spots and have more time to enjoy the parks without the stress of long lines. Parking at the Walt Disney World theme parks is easy, but keep in mind there is a parking fee for off-site guests.

Can Staying Off Disney Property Save Money?

This is a tricky one. It really depends on how you plan to spend your vacation, among other factors. Let’s go over it all below:

Lower Accommodation Costs

Let’s be real—staying at Disney-owned hotels can be really pricey, especially if you’re booking during peak season or looking at deluxe resorts. 

Off-site hotels and vacation rentals often offer much more competitive pricing, especially if you’re traveling with a large family or extended family.

Many off-site accommodations, like the Holiday Inn or Waldorf Astoria, offer more space and amenities for your dollar, which can make a big difference in your overall vacation experience. 

You might find that for the price of a value resort at Disney, you can book a larger room or even an entire house offsite, complete with extra space and features like a private pool or a full kitchen.

This added space can be a game-changer if you’re traveling with kids. Imagine being able to spread out, prepare some meals in your own kitchen, or relax in a separate living area while the kids nap.

If you are traveling with a larger party and looking for a house, I highly recommend looking in the Reunion area. I’ve stayed at many homes in the neighborhood, so drop a comment if you wanna chat more about it! 

The savings on food alone, by making a few meals at home, can help offset the cost of renting a car or paying for parking.

Hidden Costs

Before you assume offsite accommodations are automatically cheaper, keep in mind some hidden costs that can creep up. 

Renting a car isn’t essential when staying off-site, but if you do rent, that comes with extra money spent on rental fees and gas.

You’ll also need to budget for parking fees at the Disney parks if you plan to drive, which currently start at $25 a day for standard parking. 

And while many off-site hotels offer complimentary shuttles to the parks, some may charge resort fees or extra costs for parking at the hotel itself. It’s always a good idea to check the fine print when booking.

If you plan to stay the whole day at the parks, taking a rideshare there and back isn’t too bad. 

Are Off-Site Hotels Better Value?

When comparing costs, it’s important to look at the big picture.

Sure, staying at a Disney World hotel comes with perks like early entry, extended evening hours at select parks, and easy access to Disney’s dining reservation system, but the overall price tag can add up.

By staying off-site, you’ll have the flexibility to explore other parts of the Orlando area, grab affordable groceries, and avoid some of the premium prices charged at Disney resort hotels.

That said, if you’re focused on immersing your family in the Disney magic for your entire vacation, staying on-site might be worth the extra cost.

But if you’re looking for a mix of convenience, savings, and flexibility, offsite accommodations can provide excellent value for your Disney World trip.

Lodging Options Off-Site vs.On-Site

Lodging is a big deal for a Disney vacay, so weighing the options of staying at a non-Disney resort or at one of the Walt Disney World Resort hotels can feel like a big decision. 

Wide Range of Choices

When staying off Disney property, one of the biggest perks is the variety of accommodations available to suit any budget or style. 

From budget-friendly hotels to luxury resorts like the Waldorf Astoria, you’ll find options that fit your needs and give you more bang for your buck.

Offsite hotels can offer extra amenities like larger rooms, family suites, or even private homes with a game room and private pool.

If you’re traveling with a large group or extended family, having more space to spread out can be a huge advantage, especially after a long day at the Disney theme parks.

For families looking to save on lodging, budget hotels and Good Neighbor Hotels (I’ll get into those more below) are a fantastic option.

Many offer free breakfast and access to shuttle services that take you directly to the parks, giving you a taste of convenience without paying the higher price tag of Disney hotels.

Insider Tip: If you still don’t feel confident about which hotel to go with, work with a Disney-certified travel agent. Look for the “earmarked” travel agencies. They can give you the inside scoop on the best offsite hotels near Walt Disney World, and their services are often completely free to you! Plus, they’ll help with park planning, dining, and any other needs you have, so you’re never on your own.

Good Neighbor Hotels

Alright, we covered a lot about lodging perks, but it’s time to chat about Good Neighbor hotels!

What Are Good Neighbor Hotels?

If you’re considering staying off Disney property but still want some of the perks that come with a Disney vacation, Good Neighbor Hotels are the perfect compromise. 

These are a group of around 45 hotels in the Orlando area that are not owned by Disney but are approved by Disney.

They offer a range of options, from budget-friendly to luxury stays, and are typically located near Disney property, making them convenient for park visits. 

While they don’t have the same level of Disney-theming as the on-site resorts, they are still great options for families who want to be close to the magic without the full Disney price tag.

Perks Good Neighbor Hotels Offer

One of the biggest perks of staying at a Good Neighbor Hotel, like the Swan and Dolphin, is that you can enjoy some of the same benefits as Disney resort hotel guests without paying the extra cost of staying in a Disney-owned resort. 

For instance, guests at these hotels can book advanced dining reservations and take advantage of Disney transportation, including the buses and boats that run between the parks and the hotels.

Some Good Neighbor Hotels even offer Extra Magic Hours or early entry to the parks, which is a fantastic benefit when you want to hit those popular attractions without waiting in long lines. 

Also, a lot of these hotels partner with Disney to offer deals and packages that can make your stay even more affordable. In fact, I just booked a stay at Swan and Dolphin with a 30% off discount!

Day-to-Day Convenience

We’ve covered a lot, but but I think it’s important to also cover convenience. 

Dining Flexibility

One of the main perks of staying offsite is the dining flexibility you gain. With access to grocery stores, local restaurants, and delivery options, your meal choices become much more affordable and varied. 

If you’re staying in a vacation rental with a full kitchen, you can easily cook some meals at home, which is a great way to save money compared to dining in the parks. 

Plus, if you prefer familiar chain restaurants or want to try local spots outside of the Disney bubble, staying offsite opens up a world of possibilities.

Break from Disney Stimuli

Another advantage of staying offsite is having a quieter, more relaxing environment to return to after a full day at the parks. 

As much as I love the magic of Disney, the constant stimulation can be overwhelming for both kids and adults. Heading back to a calm, non-Disney hotel can provide a much-needed break from the excitement and allow your family to recharge for the next day.

Experience

From my personal experience, staying offsite during one of our Disney World trips gave us the perfect balance of Disney fun and relaxation. We stayed at a place with spacious rooms and a pool, and I can’t tell you how refreshing it was to step away from the parks at the end of the day. 

The quieter environment allowed my kids to unwind, and we enjoyed dinners at nearby offsite restaurants where we didn’t have to worry about making a dining reservation months in advance.

Food and Dining Options

One of the biggest advantages of staying off Disney property is the opportunity for self-catering. If you choose a vacation rental or hotel with kitchen amenities, you can easily prepare some meals at home. 

This is perfect for families with picky eaters, those looking to save on food costs, or anyone who just enjoys cooking.

With grocery stores nearby, stocking up on essentials is so easy, and you can enjoy your meals at your own pace without the rush of dining reservations.

I personally save a trip to the store and do Shipt or Instacart. 

I’ve even booked catering through EZ Cater and private chefs for clients who have held retreats for a short-term rental. In fact, I even booked a really fun charcuterie company, and the guests LOVED it! There are so many fun options you can do!!

Cost Savings on Food

When you’re not bound to Disney’s dining options, you have the freedom to eat at more affordable offsite restaurants or prepare meals yourself. 

Dining at Disney restaurants can add up quickly, especially if you’re eating all three meals in the parks. Grabbing groceries or eating at local chain restaurants can be significantly cheaper and allow you to stick to your budget. 

Plus, if you’re staying somewhere with a full kitchen, you can prepare simple meals and snacks, making your vacation more cost-effective.

I also love the convenience of being able to pick up groceries or have them delivered when staying offsite.

There are plenty of grocery stores near Disney World property like Publix, and the ease of having snacks, breakfast items, and quick meals on hand makes the trip much smoother.

It’s also great for grabbing water bottles and snacks before heading to the parks, so you don’t have to worry about paying premium prices inside.

Personal Preference and Flexibility

There are certain scenarios where staying offsite just makes more sense for families. If you’re traveling with a larger group, need more space, or are on a tight budget, offsite hotels or vacation rentals might be the best option. 

Offsite stays often provide more room to spread out, multiple bedrooms, and added amenities like private pools or game rooms. This is especially beneficial for families who plan to spend time relaxing at the hotel or need a quiet escape from the crowds.

Another situation where offsite accommodations might be better is if you’re planning a longer trip and want more flexibility with your schedule.

While staying at Disney hotels keeps you in the Disney bubble, offsite stays allow you to explore more of the Orlando area, including other parks like Universal Orlando or local attractions outside of the Disney magic.

On one of our trips, we decided to stay offsite in a vacation rental with a private pool and full kitchen. We were traveling with extended family and needed extra space.

It was the perfect fit for us because we were able to cook breakfast and dinner at home, saving us time and money. 

Plus, the kids loved having the private pool to themselves, and it gave us a break from the overstimulation of the parks.

While we missed some of the on-site perks, like early access to the parks, the extra space and flexibility were exactly what our family needed at that time.

So, Is It Worth It To Stay At an Off-Site Hotel?

Staying off Disney property can be a great option for families who are looking for more flexibility, cost savings, and extra space during their Disney World trip. 

Offsite accommodations often come with perks like more affordable rates, bigger rooms, or even entire homes with game rooms and private pools. You can also take advantage of being in the real world, with access to nearby restaurants, grocery stores, and free parking, which can help you save extra money.

Even though you won’t be right in the Disney bubble, offsite stays offer more variety and customization for your Walt Disney World vacation, especially for large groups or families with specific needs.
