If your kids are as obsessed with Minions as mine is, then this paper plate Minion craft is going to be a major hit for your next crafty afternoon.
Inspired by everyone’s favorite yellow characters from Despicable Me, this activity is perfect for young children, older kids, and even a group of friends at Minion parties or birthday parties.
What makes this craft great?
It’s simple, uses basic craft supplies you likely already have, and lets your kids get creative with their very own adorable Minion.
Plus, it’s one of those easy crafts that keep little hands busy while you catch a moment to breathe (or join in for some fun art of your own).
Ready to try it out? Let’s make some Minions!
How to Make a Paper Plate Minion
Supplies needed:
- Black washable paint
- Yellow washable paint
- 2 paper plates
- Googly eyes (and/or black and white construction paper)
- Large popsicle stick
- Tape
- Paint brush
- Black marker (optional)

The first thing you’ll want to do is take your scotch tape and tape the large popsicle stick to the back of the paper plate, leaving at least half hanging out the bottom. This is mainly to allow you to paint without getting messy.
You can also glue it, if you prefer.

Pour yellow paint onto the plate. Take your paint brush and cover the entire plate in the yellow paint. Let it sit until it is dry.

Once the yellow paint is dry, take the black color paint and brush a line across the paper plate to create the eye area. Let it sit until dry.

Now, take your black marker and draw a curved line to make the mouth

Add your eyes (or eyes if you want your minion to have two). I realized a little too late that I ran out of the larger googly eyes. So, I improvised and cut out a circle out of white paper. I glued that down and then added the googly eye to the middle.

The nice thing about this craft, is you can pivot as needed and customize however you want. Feel free to add in hair, or other extra touches to make your minion unique.

And that’s it! This craft checks all the boxes for a fun and easy activity… its simple, perfect for all ages, a great way to keep kids busy, and works for any occasion.
A Few Tips When Crafting With Kids…
- Prep ahead: Cut out the paper pieces (like goggles and overalls, if you’re going all in) ahead of time if you’re working with younger kids.
- Keep it mess-free: Use washable paint for easy cleanup and lay down newspaper to protect your workspace.
- Get creative: Let the kids experiment with different Minion designs… add a bow, change the facial expressions, or use glitter if they’re feeling fancy.
- Perfect for groups: If you’re doing this at a party, set up a “craft station” with all the materials ready to go. I love this idea for a Despicable Me-themed birthday party.
FAQ
Q: Can I use a small paper plate?
A: Definitely! Small paper plates are perfect for little hands and still capture the charm of this craft. If you don’t have any paper plates, no biggie. Just use a piece of construction paper.
Q: What if I don’t have googly eyes?
A: No problem! Use white circles and draw on the pupils with a black marker. I ran into the issue of not having big enough googly eyes, and so I used white paper to help me out. Just use what you have and go with it. No need to follow the instructions to a T. They’ll come out cute regardless.
Q: How long does this craft take?
A: Around 30–40 minutes, including drying time. Use a fan if you want the paint to dry quicker.
Q: Is this craft toddler-friendly?
A: Yes! Just pre-cut the shapes and use non-toxic supplies. Let toddlers focus on painting.
Q: Can this work for Minion parties?
A: 100%! It’s a huge hit at birthday parties or any Minion-themed event.
