You are finally going on your first trip to the Disney Parks! How exciting!
The whole family is sure to have an amazing time, but since you haven’t been to a Disney park before, there are some things that you may not know.
Not to worry, because I’ve got all of the Disney park hacks, tips, and tricks for first-time visitors right here. These apply no matter which parks you may be visiting, and knowing them and being prepared will make your trip even more magical, I promise you!
Things To Know Before You Go to Disney
Now before we jump into the full list of tips for while you are at the parks, I wanted to quickly go over some things you should do prior to your vacation.
I have a whole breakdown of this over at How To Master Disney Travel Prep, so make sure to bookmark that, but this will give you a good overview for now.
INSIDER SAVINGS TIP: I highly recommend Undercover Tourist to help find the best deals. They can save you a ton of money on your vacation!
How to Choose the Right Time to Visit Disney
When it comes to planning your first visit to Disney World, picking the right time can make or break your experience.
Trust me, I’ve been there—pushing a stroller through Magic Kingdom on a summer day where it feels like you’re in a bowl of steaming soup, trying to keep the kiddo entertained during long lines. It’s no fun!
The best time to visit is when crowd levels are low and the weather is manageable.
For a lot of first-timers, January and February are great times to visit. The holiday rush is over, the weather is cooler, and the parks are less crowded.
But if you’re aiming for warmer weather, late April to early May is another sweet spot—after Spring Break and before the school vacation rush and summer heat kick in.
However, be mindful of the busy times like:
- Holiday weekends
- Spring break
- Summer months
- New ride/attraction opening days
Central Florida can be hot and humid, and the size of San Francisco-sized Walt Disney World can feel even bigger when you’re dealing with both long lines and the heat.
So, if you’re flexible with dates, avoid these peak times for a more enjoyable experience.
Special Events and Seasonal Activities
One of the great things about Disney World is that there’s always something special happening, no matter when you visit.
If your first visit falls during the fall, you might want to check out Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party at Magic Kingdom. It’s a fantastic event with trick-or-treating, a special parade, and, of course, plenty of opportunities to see Mickey Mouse and friends in their Halloween best.

If you’re more of a foodie, the Epcot Food & Wine Festival is a must-do. Held from late summer to early fall, this event offers a world of flavors at various booths scattered around the World Showcase.
It’s a great time to explore and sample dishes from around the world, all within walking distance.

And don’t forget the holiday season! From mid-November through December, Disney transforms into the most magical place with festive decorations, special shows, and even “snow” on Main Street. It’s a great idea to visit during this time if you love Christmas.

Understanding Disney World’s Park System
Disney World isn’t just one park where you can walk from Magic Kingdom over to Animal Kingdom. It’s a massive entertainment district with four separate parks, Magic Kingdom, Epcot, Hollywood Studios, and Animal Kingdom, plus two water parks and Disney Springs.
- Magic Kingdom is probably what comes to mind when you think of Disney—a place where younger kids can meet Mickey Mouse and ride iconic attractions like “It’s a Small World” and Space Mountain.
- Epcot is more of a learning adventure with its Future World and World Showcase. It’s where you’ll find rides like Remy’s Ratatouille Adventure and get to sample foods from around the world.
- Disney’s Hollywood Studios is a hit for Star Wars fans with attractions like Rise of the Resistance and Slinky Dog Dash
- Animal Kingdom offers a mix of wildlife and thrill rides, making it a favorite for families.

Where to Stay at Disney World
Choosing where to stay is one of the most important decisions in your Disney planning process.
You can, of course, stay off property at a neighboring hotel, in a short-term rental in the Reunion area, but I would strongly consider staying on property for your first visit.
Staying at a Walt Disney World Resort hotel can be more convenient, especially for first-timers.
You’ll get perks like early entry to the parks and easy access to Disney transportation, like the monorail, buses, or even the Minnie Vans.
On the flip side, staying off-site can save you some money, and there are plenty of good options nearby. However, you might miss out on some of the Disney magic and have to rely on other transportation methods to get to the parks.

How to Get to Walt Disney World Resort
Getting to Disney from Orlando International Airport (MCO) is pretty straightforward, but there are a few options to consider.
Disney’s Magical Express used to be the go-to for getting to your Disney hotel, but now you’ll need to look at other options like Mears Connect, rideshares like Uber or Lyft, or renting a car.
For convenience, the Minnie Vans are a fantastic option for some resort guests—they’re Disney-operated Lyft vehicles, and they can get you from MCO to your hotel in style. Just keep in mind that they are a bit pricier.
If you’re staying off-site, renting a car or using a shuttle service might be your best bet.
Make sure to bookmark this Transportation Guide for a full breakdown. It’ll help you so much with navigating to the resorts.

Park Ticket Options and Packages
One last thing before we get into the first-timer hacks… ticket options.
When it comes to buying park tickets, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed. For first-timers, the standard base ticket that allows you to visit one park per day is often the best choice.
But if you’re more adventurous and want to experience as much as possible, the park hopper option can be a great idea, especially if you’re only in Disney for a few days.
Also, consider looking into packages that include accommodations, park tickets, and even the Disney Dining Plan if it’s offered during your visit.
These packages can sometimes save you money and make the planning process easier. Just make sure you compare prices and see if the package deal really fits your needs.
INSIDER TIP: One of the best ways to save on your Disney vacation is to book through a Disney travel agent who can help you navigate the different options and find the best deals. They can also assist with park reservations and dining reservations, ensuring you get to experience your favorite rides and restaurants without stress.
Disney Hacks for First Timers
Alright, now that you are prepared to arrive for your vacation, let’s go over some really great tips and tricks to help everything run smoothly for you!
Download the My Disney Experience App on Your Phones
Okay, the very first thing you’ll want to do once your vacation is booked is download The My Disney Experience phone app. This app is like having a personal tour guide in your pocket.
You can use the app for maps, wait times, Lightning Lane Multi & Single Pass reservations, mobile ordering food, and interactive games to keep you entertained while you wait in line.
Buy Lightning Lanes Passes and Plan Your Must-Do Attractions
Everyone has a ride or attraction that they absolutely must do or their vacation will not be complete. Write down everyone in your group’s must-do attraction in each park and create a plan for it so that no one misses out.
Once you have your list of top rides, you’ll want to get online early in the morning for Lightning Lane booking days (7 days out). At hte 7 day mark, you’ll be able to book rides.
I know it sucks that the Lightning Lane service is an extra cost, but I promise you that budgeting for this is worth the time you’ll save.
Pack a Park Bag
Take a park bag with you to hold your necessities. Sunscreen, ponchos, snacks, a portable phone charger, and lip balm are all great choices for your park bag.
Get Free Water
First-time visitors may not know it, but you can get free ice water at any quick-service restaurant in the parks, all you have to do is ask. This is a great way to stay hydrated during your day in the park without having to spend a small fortune on drinks.
Pack a Portable Charger
You will be using your cell phone a LOT while you are in the park for photos, maps, reservations, and more.
Make sure that you keep a full charge all day long by packing a portable battery bank (and the cord!) into your park bag. Don’t forget to recharge your portable charger in your hotel room before you head back out to the parks.
These are my three favorites for the parks. Fuelrods swap stations are actually found around the parks, too.
Use Mobile Ordering for Quick Service Restaurants.
You are already going to be waiting in line for rides and attractions so don’t spend more of your time waiting in line for food. Instead, take advantage of the mobile ordering option in the My Disney Experience app and skip the line. Just go pick up your party’s food when it’s ready.
Be Prepared for Rain
South Florida weather can be a bit unpredictable and you can expect a surprise afternoon shower at any time. Pop some ponchos or rain jacket in your park bag, and you’ll be ready just in case.
Be at the Park For Rope Drop
Rope drop or when the park opens for the day is your chance to get to some of your must-do attractions without having to spend so much time in line. So get to the park early, check your map so you know where you are headed, and check some of those must-dos off of your list.
Make Use of the Baby Care Centers
Many first-time guests are unaware that each Disney park has a baby center for parents of infants and toddlers to use. Inside the centers, there are changing stations, nursing rooms, restrooms, high chairs, and tables and chairs.
There is even a shop where you can purchase diapers, wipes, formula, or clothing if you forget them or run out during your park stay.
You can find where baby centers are located in your My Disney Experience app.

Take Advantage Of Rider Switch
If you have children who can’t or don’t want to ride some of the attractions save yourself some time by taking advantage of the Rider Switch option. One of you goes on the ride while the other stays with the kids, and then the adults can swap places without having to wait in line.
Dress Comfortably
Days in the parks are long, and you will be walking a lot. Make sure that you wear lightweight breathable clothing and very comfortable shoes.
For clothes, go for comfort! Here are a few of my go-to park outfit essentials:
- This maroon tank top and pink shorts are not only a good idea, but also practical for those sudden warm downpours during the rainy season.
- This pink tank top dress with shorts combo is a MUST! It’s perfect for those average high-temperature days in Central Florida.
- The bright red tank top is perfect for staying cool during warm weather, and the comfortable black shorts are ideal for lots of walking. This is a Disney bound outfit for Minnie Mouse. Oh, and how cute are the socks!?

You’ll be doing a ton of walking, so good shoes are a must. Supportive walking shoes will keep your feet happy as you explore the Disney theme parks.
- Water shoes for water parks
- Tevas
- Comfy athletic shoes
Also, consider packing a pair of sandals for water rides or if you plan to relax at your Disney resort pool.
Rent Or Bring a Stroller
If you have young children, even toddlers, consider bringing a stroller or renting one from the park for them to use. Disney parks are huge, and their little legs might tire out quicker than you think.
Having a stroller gives them a place to sit and rest while still exploring everything that Disney has to offer.
Make sure to check out the stroller rental guide for a nice breakdown!
I personally love the UppaBaby Vista V2 because it’s easy to break down, but if you have multiple kids, I would go with the Baby Jogger City Mini Double.

Use Your Extra Magic Hours
If you are staying at a Disney resort, you may be eligible for extra magic hours where you can either enter the park early or stay a little later. This is a great way to ride popular attractions while there are fewer people in the park and shorter lines.
Check for Last Minute Dining Reservations
If there was a sit-down restaurant that you really wanted to dine in but weren’t able to get reservations for, be sure to check their availability on the app.
Things can change, sometimes even at the last minute so it’s always worth checking to see if a spot has opened up.
All you have to do is:
- Open the Disney app
- Click the “+” sign
- Select your party size
- OR, select “Hungry Now? Join Walkup List”
